Water Quality Stewards

Once a month on Tuesdays in the summer in Sandpoint, Idaho, a group of 30 volunteers get into their kayaks and boats and set out for 15 different sites in Idaho’s biggest lake, Lake Pend Oreille, to take water samples.

They are the Water Quality Stewards of the Idaho Conservation League, and these dedicated volunteers are this year’s winners of the Idaho Philanthropy Day Timeless Adult Volunteer Award.

The Stewards bring a variety of backgrounds to their volunteer work for the Idaho Conservation League, but they all share one common interest: the well-being of Lake Pend Oreille.

Luke Sharon

Luke Sharon is a senior at Lake City High School in Coeur d'Alene. He’s also the Student Body President of his class, the leader of the Student Advisory Group for CDA Public Schools, and a champion of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) learning in his community. The long list of accolades only begins to tell you about the generous, genuine person he is.

It’s fitting, then, that in recognition of all the ways he gives back and brings innovative ideas to his community, Luke is this year’s Timeless Youth Philanthropist. As his community can attest, Luke exemplifies the community-minded, altruistic spirit that this award stands for.

Kaycee Dixey

As the 2022-2023 Miss Shoshone-Bannock Queen, Kaycee Dixey served as a role model for Native youth and an ambassador for the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes. True to her intrepid spirit, Kaycee exemplified every aspect of the role—and then went above and beyond.

Becky Martin, who works with Kaycee at the Shoshone-Bannock Casino Hotel and nominated her for an Idaho Philanthropy Day Award, has witnessed again and again how Kaycee goes beyond what’s expected to serve her community and help Indigenous culture thrive. It was a no-brainer to nominate Kaycee for the Treasured Adult Philanthropist Award.

Matchwood Brewing Company

On October 20th, Matchwood Brewing Company celebrated its 5th anniversary. True to the brewery’s community-centered spirit, they brought in the same band that had performed at their opening; brought out Ester, their tiny tap track, to give free pours; had a silent disco; and created a festive, welcoming experience for their Sandpoint community.

In many ways, it’s just another day in the life of the Sandpoint neighborhood brewery where “personal connections foster positive community change through the power of dialogue and laughter — one delicious handcrafted beer at a time,” as their mission states. For Matchwood, giving back isn’t an obligation or an afterthought — it’s a way of life.

LEAP Housing

What happens when you bring together a group of knowledgeable, talented real estate agents intent on creating more opportunities for people in Boise to become homeowners? The result is LEAP Housing, a Boise-based nonprofit and the 2023 winner of the Idaho Philanthropy Day Talented Nonprofit Award.

A housing nonprofit, LEAP came into being when a local realtor saw too many people unable to access safe, stable and affordable housing. That realtor is LEAP’s energetic CEO and founder, Bart Cochran. Bart started the organization after a decade in real estate, and while he hadn’t set out to start a nonprofit, he realized it was the best way he could help people.

Talented Volunteer Manager 2023
Mabel Dobbs

2023 has been a momentous year for Mabel Dobbs. In the spring, she was greeted at her office at Angel Wings Network in Weiser, Idaho, by members of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority carrying bouquets of yellow roses. The sorority had elected Mabel First Lady of Weiser.

“How exciting is that?” Mabel said at the time. “It wasn’t about a month later that I got a call from Weiser Valley Roundup. They wanted to know if I would honor them and be their Grand Marshall for the Roundup this year.”

Mabel was a cattle rancher for many years with her husband and they looked forward to the Roundup every year, so serving as Grand Marshall was extra meaningful.
