Use your talent for good.

Giving talent to charitable causes calls on Idahoans to turn our trademark determination and unique expertise into solutions for the state’s pressing challenges. When nonprofit staff need more than just an extra pair of hands, they turn to skills-based volunteers — including their board of directors.
"Most nonprofits don’t have access to the resources, funding, or talent to function effectively and achieve their missions. Donating your time and expertise can help fill those gaps."
Talents we may even overlook in ourselves are oftentimes desperately needed to help our neighbors. No matter your professional background or how busy your schedule may be, you can make an impact by providing skilled service to a cause.

Find projects in your skillset.

Serve on a board of directors.

Nonprofit board members are the (typically unpaid) volunteers responsible for the oversight and governance of the organization. They differ from nonprofit staff, who are the (typically paid) employees tasked with the day-to-day implementation and operation of the organization.

The number one indicator of an effective board member is a passion for the cause. As a board member, you're an ambassador to the community, a leader in the organization, an advocate for the mission, and a steward of resources. But it's not all fun and games: each member of the board assumes a personal legal liability for the fiduciary duties of the organization.

As a nonprofit board member, you have a...
  • Duty of care to exercise prudent judgement and actively participate in decision-making on behalf of the organization
  • Duty of loyalty to put the needs of the organization before your personal or professional interests (or those of others)
  • Duty of obedience to all laws and policies set by the local, state, and federal government as well as the mission and bylaws of the organization itself.

Interested in learning more about how to serve on a nonprofit board of directors? The Idaho Nonprofit Center hosts board member training sessions many times a year. In the meantime, review the guide on board service in Idaho compiled by the Idaho Attorney General's office. You may also want to explore BoardSource, the leading national authority on all things board governance.

Board Member Boot Camp is a 3-part training webinar offered by the Idaho Nonprofit Center to cover the basics of board service. It is recommended for board members new to their role, board members in need of a refresher, and anyone interested in learning what it takes to serve on a board of directors.

Develop your professional skills.
